It Ma(t)Ters 2021
It Ma(t)Ters 2021 took place on April 12―April 14 for the first time in an online format due to Corona restrictions. Nevertheless, we had a lively exchange with lots of great science and social activities!
Along with the online format came the highest number of attendees EVER – with a peak of 70+ attendees in the video conference from MPIs in Bremen, Marburg, Plön, and more. 2021 also marks the introduction of the Elevator Pitch Presentations- in which industry insiders from the Max Planck give judged and gave feedback on the presentations.
Best oral presenters voted by the audience:
Luca Schulz and Benedikt Geier
Best poster presenters voted by the audience:
Dennis Jakob and Marie-Caroline Müller
Best elevator pitchers voted by Max-Planck jury:
Tolganay Kabdullayeva and Anneke Heins
From the organisation team 2021 to our attendees and presenters, thank you!

The Max Planck Society operates in 84 Max Planck Institutes all over Germany as well as abroad. The Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology (MPI-Ma) in Bremen and the Max Planck Institute for Terrestrial Microbiology (MPI-Ter) in Marburg are the only two institutes dedicated exclusively to microbiology. While the focus of the two institutes differs in terms of their environmental classifications, both of their research aims are to increase our knowledge on how microorganisms function and contribute to important processes on our planet. To combine the knowledge of the two institutes, to establish new collaborations, and to network and discuss fascinating cutting-edge science, the It Ma(t)Ters Conference was initiated. The first conference took place in Marburg and ever since, the host institute switches every year.
