The MPI for Marine Microbiology and the MPI for Terrestrial Microbiology were founded in 1992 and 1991 respectively. Both institutes are focused on basic research on microbes in the environment, and both institutes are home International Max Planck Research Schools (IMPRS) providing world-class training to the next generation of scientists. Every year since 2017, the location of It Ma(t)Ters has alternated between Marburg and Bremen.
